Thoughts on the holiday season

The days are long but the years are short. You only get 18 summers with your kids. You only get a few holiday seasons with the magic of little children. The college years are the best of your life…

The “slipping through your fingers” narrative telling us to prioritize differently – no matter what we're actually doing or what life phase we're in – can be relentless, especially around the holidays.

Do you get those reels on your feed, too? It's exhausting. Aren't we already doing enough?

Here's my antidote, and one I've practiced for a long time – since the “golden college years," in fact.

It's really quite simple, but what I tell myself is, “I'm doing the best I can, and I'm enjoying this season of life to the fullest.” It doesn't always come through with that much formality or Instagram-y-ness. The quick versions that run through my mind are: “I am enjoying this time. I am making the most of this. I am doing the best I can. I am soaking this in right now.” I think them to myself, on purpose and often.

What I'm doing is creating a new pathway for my brain. I'm training it to stop thinking “not enough" so that instead, in the future, I will trust and believe myself that I did in fact enjoy this time and do the very best that I could.

The ironic truth is, if we spend the present moment internalizing this type of scarcity message and stressing about not doing it right – we actually will set ourselves up for distraction and the potential for regret. I'd rather put in the effort for self-love today, and give the future me the gift to not live with worry. I am doing my best. No one can do it all at once. I am prioritizing the things that are most important to me today – and that's enough.
